Moma Canucha, is the legend of a young Bulgarian girl that chose to suicide in order to avoid to become victim of the Turkish invasion and to be forced to convert to the Islamic religion. Following this dramatic decision, Moma jumped from the hedge of the Rhodopes cliffs in the Mestra basin. Forgotten people of Europe, the Pomaks, the Muslim minority of Bulgaria, did not jump.
Pulled in alternative direction due to their origin and their faith, the Pomaks are particularly touched by the questions of national identity of their country. Occupying an ambiguous and instable limbo, the older generation fights to safeguard its traditions, while the younger one looks at Western Europe as the promising land for a better life.
The generosity, the faith and the memory of this people have inspired this work.

Maison Bergamini is happy to present in its first solo exhibition in Belgium the work of the emergent photographer Camille Carbonaro. Situating her practice between photography and photobook auto-production, Camille Carbonaro explores and investigates individual and collective memory as well as processes of contemporary identities constructions in different socio-economic and political contexts.
In her research the artist exploits intimal and family archives in order to propose, through her own aesthetic vocabulary, a re-reading of the encountered territories, imaginaries and subjects. Archive images, letters and notes, together with the artist’s own photographic exploration come to recompose in an orchestral dialogue the universes and histories of the people met. The transfiguration on paper and in the shape of the book, finally allows for these different signs of collected memory to interact in a way that activates new levels of understanding of the histories evocated.
In her work Pomaks, the artist proposes an exploration of the universe of one of the less known socio-cultural groups in Europe, the Muslim minority of Bulgaria. Both kindly and powerfully the images draw us within the human, natural and social world of this people.
Teller of an untold (hi)story, rewriter and guardian of the memories and of the contrasting identities the Pomaks negotiate confronted by contemporary cultural and socio-economic transformations, the artist finally becomes voice and eyes of a people History seems to have forget.

Camille Carbonaro
Born in 1989 in Marseille, Camille lives and works in Brussels.
While undertaking her education in applied arts, she discovers photography thanks to Baudouin, a press photographer she will assist in his studio in Paris (www.baudouin.fr). To improve her knowledge on this practice, she undertakes studies in photography, obtaining a BA in Photography from the University Paris VIII, which she integrates with a diploma from the Ecole Supérieure des Arts le 75 obtained in June 2015.
Carbonaro’s photographic work focuses on the fields of memory and remembering. Her series reproduce her fascination towards archives and founded objects, which, in dialogue with her photos come to constitute a visual archaeology. She further transcribes her stories by employing the book as a means of artistic communication.
It is the great fascination the photographer feels towards this medium that pushed her to undertake this year a first course in book binding technics at the Académie des Beaux Arts de Saint Gilles in Brussels.
Finally, and complementarily, Camille is now experimenting also embroidering and sewing technics that she is experimenting of photographic works. In this way, the artist questions both her own relationship with photography as a practice as well as challenges the formal rules attached to it.

Moma Canucha, La légende d’une jeune fille bulgare qui, pour ne pas tomber entre les mains des Turcs et se convertir à l’Islam, se suicide en sautant du sommet des Rhodopes dans la rivière Mestra. Peuple oublié d’Europe, minorité bulgare de confession musulmane, les Pomaks n’ont pas sauté.
Tiraillés entre leur foi et leur origine, les Pomaks sont fortement touchés par les problèmes d’identité nationale de leur pays. Dans un entre-deux flottant, les anciens aspirent à préserver les traditions, alors que les jeunes rêvent d’un avenir meilleur dans l’Europe de l’Ouest.
La générosité, la foi, et la mémoire de ce peuple délaissé ont inspiré ce travail.

La Maison Bergamini est ravie de présenter dans sa première exposition solo en Belgique le travail de la jeune photographe Camille Carbonaro. Entre la photographie et l’objet livre auto-édité, le travail de Camille Carbonaro explore et interroge la mémoire individuelle et collective et le processus de construction des identités contemporaines.
Dans sa recherche, l’artiste se sert d’archives intimes et familiales (images, lettres, notes) pour proposer, à travers son langage esthétique propre, une relecture des territoires, des imaginaires et des individus rencontrés.
Dans sa série Pomaks, l’artiste propose un voyage à la découverte d’une minorité religieuse et socio-culturelle méconnue en Europe. Avec délicatesse et puissance, ses images nous plongent dans un précieux univers. Visages, paysages, et espaces d’interactions dressent leur portrait et façonnent un récit.
Face aux transformations culturelles et socio-économiques contemporaines, l’artiste devient narratrice d’une histoire complexe non écrite. Elle se fait alors voix et yeux de ce peuple oublié par l’histoire.

Camille Carbonaro
Née en 1989 à Marseille, Camille vit et travaille à Bruxelles depuis 3 ans.
Elle découvre le métier de photographe lors de son parcours en Arts appliqués grâce à Baudouin (www.baudouin.fr), photographe de presse et de publicité pour qui elle sera assistante à Paris. Elle poursuit ensuite une licence en Photographie à l’Université Paris VIII et intègre l'Ecole Supérieure des Arts le 75 en Photographie dont elle en sort diplômée en juin 2015.
Son travail photographique est orienté vers les champs de la mémoire et du souvenir. A travers ses séries, on ressent son engouement pour les archives et objets récupérés, littéralement « ramassés par terre », qui forment avec ses photographies une archéologie visuelle. Elle transcrit ensuite ses histoires à travers l'objet livre, pour lequel elle porte une véritable affection. Empreint de ses narrations photographiques, il est un moyen de diffusion idéal. Elle poursuit cette année son initiation au cours de reliure à l’Académie des Beaux Arts de Saint Gilles à Bruxelles. Ainsi, elle pense, fabrique et confectionne elle-même l’objet.
En parallèle, Camille découvre la broderie et la couture et expérimente sur les photos. Elle altère son rapport à l'image et chamboule les lois de la photographie. Fil et collage donnent une nouvelle réinterprétation de l’image, une histoire de plus.
